Words are Powerful (Bible Study)

“Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.” And His disciples heard it. Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.” 

So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” Mark 11:12-14, 20-24 (NKJV).

Words are seeds. You plant seeds into the soil of the future whenever you say something. Every seed is a forest in the making. That means, when you plant the seed of words, you set in motion the process that will turn what you said into a harvest. If it is good seed, you will reap good harvest. If it is bad seed, you will reap bad harvest.

There is no force on earth that is as powerful as your words. Everything you see on earth today are products of God’s words. As God said it in Genesis chapter one, it appeared. That means, you can create your world with your word.

Look at how the world was created. 

Genesis 1:3, “Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.”

Genesis 1:6-7, “Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. Thus, God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.”

Genesis 1:9, “Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear; and it was so.” 

Genesis 1:11, “Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so.”

Genesis 1:14-15, “Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.”

Genesis 1:20, “Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” 

Genesis 1:24, “Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so.”

Genesis 1:26, “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Genesis 1:29, “And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.” 

Finally, His words yielded the desired result:

Genesis 1:31: “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”

That means, your ability to consistently say that very thing you want even when it seems as if nothing is happening is what will guarantee its manifestation!

Many people have ruined their lives, destinies, children and everything around them because of the kind of junks that proceeds from their mouths. They say things like;

“Things are hard.”

“My business is not thriving.”

“The economy has destroyed my business.”

“I am barren.”

“I am sick.”

“I am dead.”

They say to their children; “you are mad,” “I am sure you will end up as a thief or prostitute.” While you’re saying all these, the devil will be clapping for you. 

Words are powerful

All wars start with the seed of words. Marriages disintegrate because somebody planted seeds of negative words. Great relationships are destroyed by the seeds of negative words. 

Your future will either be great or stunted based on your confession. Many children became armed robbers and prostitutes because of the kind of words their parents planted into their future.

Why must you say that things are bad when it won’t change anything? Saying negative words will not change anything rather it will compound it. Telling everybody that your world is collapsing will even make them to stay far away from you.

The power of life and death is in your tongue. Please speak wisely. Speak like Jesus. Always watch the kind of seed of words you are sowing. Stop saying what you hate. Stop saying what you don’t want to see. Start saying what you want to see.

Our text shows how powerful your words can be. Brother Mark reported that Jesus was hungry. “And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.”

Physically the tree did not die immediately, but it died on the spot in the spirit. Many people miss their miracle because they allow their senses to deceive them. They are like Thomas; they will never believe you until they see it. Jesus spoke to the tree and moved on. 

It shows how positive or negative confession works. You programmed evil things the very day you started speaking negative words. It’s just that you didn’t see it. Same thing happened the day you chose to confess positively towards a particular challenge or needs.

After Peter called His attention to the tree, Jesus said to them and us; “Have faith in God”. In the original translation, He actually said; Have the God kind of faith, or Have strong faith. 

In other words, if you want to see this kind of thing happen all the time, you must operate the way God operated in Genesis chapter one and say things as He would have said it.

Jesus concluded by saying; “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.” 

That means, when you believe it in your heart, and speak it with your mouth without any iota of doubt, you will have whatever you say. Jesus mentioned “say,” “says” and “said” four times in that verse. It shows that your confession determines your possession. Expect it, confess it, and receive it.

We also discovered from this scripture, that your confession will not produce results unless it’s backed by faith. (For full teaching on Mark 11:22-24, read my book, Wonders of Faith).

Miracles are not accidental occurrences; they are the deliberate acts of God motivated by the deliberate faith of men. Miracles don’t just happen, you provoke it by faith through your confession.

There are three things your words does: 

(1). Words are Curative.

Your words can suffocate HIV, high blood pressure, leukemia, cancer, fibroid, tumor, malaria, arthritis, dislocation etc. Words are curative. It can provoke instant healing if you can speak to that issue consistently without doubt. Locate appropriate scriptures and consistently speak them to that issue. The time frame is not stated in the Bible, but you will definitely have your testimony.  

(2). Words are Creative.

You can call things which are not in existence to show up, and they will show up. The writer of Hebrews narrated the account of creation this way;

“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” Hebrews 11:3 (NKJV). 

Just like God created things with His words, you can create your circumstances by the power of your words. You wake up in the morning speak to the day. “Monday, I command you to bear uncommon fruits. I command money to show up. I command business opportunities to show up before the end of today, in Jesus Name.” As a lady desiring to get married, stand up in the middle of the night and say with boldness, “I command my husband to show up today.” Call things that are not existing to show up. Paul said,

“(As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did.” Romans 4:17 (NKJV).

(3). Words are Catastrophic.

Words are like two edged sword. It can kill you or destroy negative challenges. If you keep speaking to that negative condition, it will definitely die. If you keep inviting that negative issue with your negative words, it will kill you. Mind what proceeds from your mouth from today. It can cut your life short. 

In conclusion, watch your words. Don’t say what you hate. Don’t speak when you are angry because you will end up saying negative things. If you start paying attention to your words from today, your life will change drastically.

Many people developed debilitating ailments because of what they normally say. Why should you say, “this sickness seems to be killing me” when you are sick? Why don’t you say, “…“He Himself took our (my) infirmities and bore our (my) sicknesses.” Matthew 8:17 (NKJV).
