Stop Adjusting, Be Discontented!

Adjusting to accommodate our challenges is one of the reasons why we have few pacesetters in our clime. Instead of being discontented we simply adjust.

You lost your job, instead of searching for another one or establishing your own business, you simply adjust.

You can’t feed you family, instead of hustling to break the back of poverty, you simply adjust.

You are struggling academically, instead of burning the midnight oil or meeting someone who knows better than you to help out, you simply adjust.

Your business is no longer thriving, instead of re-strategizing and learning how to run a profitable business in the 21st century, you simply adjust and accept your condition.

Negative situations cannot change until we become RESTLESS. Our situation cannot change until we become DISCONTENTED.

Once upon a time, a man placed a frog in a pot. While the pot was cold, the frog simply relaxed. When the stove became hot, it began to adjust. As it gets hotter the frog kept adjusting and jumping until it died.

Instead of jumping out of the pot it kept adjusting until it died.

Some of us behave like the frog. When the going gets tough, we adjust. When business is no longer thriving, we adjust. When we get fired from work, we adjust. We are simply adjusters and that is why Africa is the way it is.

Take responsibility for your life from this moment!

One story that motivates me in the Bible is the story of the four lepers who were barnished outside the city gate because they were lepers. Leprous patients in the Old Testament were considered unclean.

But then, there was a challenge in Samaria. Ben-Hadad, the king of Syria besieged Samaria. Because no one could go out for business and transactions, the food in Samaria finished and there was serious hunger in the land.

While this was going on, the four lepers held a meeting at the city gate. The lepers said something and took action that resonates within me whenever I am at a crossroad. Look at what they said and the action they took:

“…Why are we sitting here until we die? If we say, ‘We will enter the city,’ the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. And if we sit here, we die also. Now therefore, come, let us surrender to the army of the Syrians. If they keep us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall only die.” And they rose at twilight to go to the camp of the Syrians; and when they had come to the outskirts of the Syrian camp, to their surprise no one was there.” 2 Kings 7:3-5.

In other words, if we sit here and keep lamenting about our predicament nothing would change. Blaming our government officials won’t change anything. Going back to the city won’t produce any result.

They said to themselves, “Why are we sitting here until we die?” Why are we adjusting to our challenges instead of looking for a way out? Why are we blaming others for our challenges? Why are we sitting here instead of looking for a way out? Why are we doing nothing about out predicament? Why are we hanging around on the streets instead of finding ways to break the back of poverty in our lineage?

That question changed my life forever. It made me not to blame anybody when things don’t go as planned. I take full responsibility for it and find ways to deal with it and move on at once.

Guess what happened when they asked that question and stepped out? God saw their determination and turned them to heroes.

“For the Lord had caused the army of the Syrians to hear the noise of chariots and the noise of horses—the noise of a great army; so they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to attack us!” Therefore they arose and fled at twilight, and left the camp intact—their tents, their horses, and their donkeys—and they fled for their lives. And when these lepers came to the outskirts of the camp, they went into one tent and ate and drank, and carried from it silver and gold and clothing, and went and hid them; then they came back and entered another tent, and carried some from there also, and went and hid it. Then they said to one another, “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we remain silent. If we wait until morning light, some punishment will come upon us. Now therefore, come, let us go and tell the king’s household.” 2 Kings 7:6-9 (NKJV).

God saw their determination and made the Syrian solders to run and leave behind everything they came to that camp with. While the king and those who were clean were dying of hunger in the city of Samaria, four lepers (without fingers and toes) were enjoying themselves because they dared to confront their challenges instead of lamenting about them.

The four lepers showed the whole nation where to get food. Just imagine lepers leading the king and his entourage, and others to the Syrian camp. Just picture it in your mind.

Stop Adjusting, Be Discontented

It was discontentment that made the four lepers to take a step of faith. They knew the journey was a dangerous one, but they vowed to step out. Before they got there, God already prepared the place for them.

Many people simply pray and do nothing. They pray and wait for the answers to their prayers. Unfortunately, we can only see the answers to our prayers when we step out and do something we have never done.

Get up and get out right now!

Search for a new job, establish that business, search for those international business partners, invent that thing, establish that NGO. Just do something new right now that will open up new channels of success for you. Stop waiting and start doing.
